Junior Infants were really excited to do the Skittles Rainbow Experiment this week. (We’re not sure if it was because they love science or couldn’t wait to eat the left over skittles!) This experiment shows that water molecules are more active in warm water than in cold water and as they come in contact with the sugar in the skittles they cause it to dissolve faster. For the experiment we needed • 1 pkt Skittles • ¼ cup cold water • 1/4 cup warm water • 2 white plates Activity To start we made predictions on what might happen and then we arranged...

Senior Infants spent all of last month learning about Space. We had a lot of fun doing different experiments and incorporating Space into our Aistear. The different Aistear stations included our roleplay area which was the International Space Station, building a rocket in construction and playdough and making space passports in our writing station. Our International Space Station roleplay area Check out inside the ISS! Our Lego and construction rockets and space stations For Science, we experimented trying to launch a rocket into the air using bicarbonate soda and vinegar in a...

Ancient Egypt We spent the month of April learning all about Ancient Egypt. We learned about Tutankhamen, the boy king, all about the pyramids and how they used to mummify their kings as they believed in the afterlife. Our favourite lesson was one of our Science lessons which involved mummifying a tomato. First, we learned all bout the mummifying process – removing the insides, cleaning the insides, then filling them up with natron (salt). Then, we applied all this new knowledge to our tomatoes. We cut out all the guts and cleaned the insides and then packed it tight with our own special...

3rd class have had another super month this October in school, read on to see the different activities they’ve been up to! Rang a trí kicked off October by learning how to multiply, they’re pros at it now and even built an array city showing the different arrays to make numbers. For maths week, we then looked at division and recognised the link between multiplication and addition and division and subtraction. To help us divide, we used skittles in groups and of course ate them after 😋 Using skittles to divide We also learnt all about plants this month. We learned...

Wow, its hard to believe we’re back to school a month already, September always flies! We have had a busy first few weeks getting settled and getting down to some 3rd class business 😎 Here are some of 3rd on their first day… We started into the month getting to know each other and finding out different facts about ourselves.. And our teacher! Our Science focus for the month was The Human Body 🦴🧠 we learned about the different organs and ‘Skelly’ dropped in to show us his!! We labeled our own skeletons organs and even played...

In St. Peter’s, we have a long history of participation in the RDS primary science events and we were delighted to continue this at Science Blast in early March. We had a fantastic day and we were delighted to share our project and our work in STEM with the Nationwide team recently. Thank you so much to Nationwide for showcasing such an important part of our school! We were at @theRDS during Science Blast in February to find about the history of the Royal Dublin Society & we met the pupils at @StPetersBray as they prepared for @esbscienceblast on #RTENationwide Friday 17th April...

STEM for Fun with the junior classes started a couple of weeks ago. Here Junior Infants, Senior Infants and 1st Class were brought to the hall each week to work with teachers and parents to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths games and challenges. This is a way for the children to engage in STEM skills in a fun and less formal way. We have been running STEM for Fun in the school for the last 4 year now and is always a favourite with pupils. Throughout the year each class will get a 5 week block of STEM for Fun with thanks to our HSCL, School Completion, teachers and...

This week in Science, we decided to find out whether or not our brains are affected when we eat chocolate. Firstly, we watched a video about the brain and illusions and how sometimes we can trick our brain with illusions. We then tried to create our own illusions by tricking our brain into thinking we had a hole in our hand. This was done by rolling a lined sheet of paper and holding it up to our eye and looking through it, while moving our hand towards and away from our eye –  it did look like we had a hole in our hands!! 🙂 Next, we looked at a slide where there was different words...

First Class have been learning all about static electricity this week in Science. Firstly we talked about the difference between static electricity and current electricity. The children shared times when they experienced static electricity like when they touched a hand rail and got a shock or heard crackling noises when they took off woolly jumpers. We talked about why this happens. The children experimented with static electricity by rubbing balloons on their hair to make it stand up!   We wanted to investigate which piece of the school uniform produces the best ‘static’. The...

Having taken a look at our school garden we agreed that it needed some love and attention.  We decided this was a project to work on in the school as part of both our Discover Primary Science and Maths project, and our sustainability project.  In 6th class we all drew our own pictures and wrote short descriptive pieces of writing about how our garden currently is.  We then put our landscaping skills to the test in planning how we would like our school garden to be.  We also did some video interviews on yard at break time with children from other classes to get some of their ideas.  We discussed...
