This week in Science, we decided to find out whether or not our brains are affected when we eat chocolate. Firstly, we watched a video about the brain and illusions and how sometimes we can trick our brain with illusions. We then tried to create our own illusions by tricking our brain into thinking we had a hole in our hand. This was done by rolling a lined sheet of paper and holding it up to our eye and looking through it, while moving our hand towards and away from our eye –  it did look like we had a hole in our hands!! 🙂 Next, we looked at a slide where there was different words... 

On Thursday morning, there was great excitement in St. Peter’s when we heard that Martin O’Neill, manager of the Irish soccer team, would be visiting! We were delighted to welcome him to St Peter’s, where he took part in a press conference and answered some of our questions. He had great advice about believing in ourselves and working hard to practise our football skills. Afterwards, 6th class and some of 5th demonstrated a drill for him and had the chance to shake his hand. Judging by the levels of excitement, it was a day not to be forgotten. Last week, 2nd class read a wonderful book called Iggy Peck Architect by Andrea Beaty. In this story there’s a little boy who is always building things. When he went on a school tour, the bridge to their picnic area collapsed and he and his class had to build a new bridge to get back across. This got us thinking about how we could make bridges. We looked at a few different types of bridges and their structures and talked about local bridges we know of. This was all under the strand of Energy and Forces. The whole school took part in our Green Schools Action Day on Friday the 10th of November.  We dressed in Green and all classes took part in lessons and activities around the theme of litter and waste.  We also focused on our school garden and we looked at improving this area. Junior Infants created a town called Juniorville using recyclable materials they gathered from home. Senior Infants gathered recyclable materials, sorted and classified them before creating their own junk art inventions. 1st class planted some seeds for our school garden.  These included peas, brocolli and rocket which... 

First class have been learning about summer, the beach and boats in Bray harbour. Our focus was how boats float in the water. We discussed the importance of boats as the transport of goods/people, but in order to do so the boat must float. Firstly we brainstormed the properties of making a boat. We discussed materials that would be good or bad to float and why. We linked the Titanic which sank and concluded our boats would require good construction without any holes to avoid sinking. In order to predict we needed to understand floating and sinking so we investigated with an orange. Once placed... 

STEM for Fun with the junior classes started a couple of weeks ago. Here Junior Infants, Senior Infants and 1st Class are brought to the hall each week to work with teachers and parents to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths games and challenges. Hi everyone! 5th Class here, and we’re going to tell you all about how we celebrated Engineers Week 2017. Firstly, we explored the work of engineers. We had a special project to complete on the interactive board in school! We also looked at this wordle challenge completed by some of our brothers and sisters a couple of years ago. The Green Schools Committee have been hard at work in picking litter each week.  We have noticed a distinctive decrease in the amount of litter which has been collected.  We have been allowing enthusiastic non-members to join our litter picks in preparation for the National Spring Clean which will be happening in Early April. Litter beware!!! Our worst blackspot 🙁 Taking our litter picking to the next level 🙂 We are very excited to be welcoming a visitor to the school later this month.  We will be learning all about composting and how we can use this as a way of decreasing the amount... 

What a busy term we have had in Senior Infants! Between our school tour to Glenroe Farm and baking rice krispie buns with First Class, learning about animals during Aistear, taking part in Bike Day, Sports Day and a minibeast hunt, having a guest speaker visit our class, planting flowers and taking part in another design and make project with Fifth Class we have been working so hard and enjoying ourselves along the way! The boys and girls from Junior Infants, Senior Infants, First and Second Class completed their sports day today. Paddy worked very hard to put together lots of games from High Jump to relay races, to egg and spoon races and catch the teacher games! Some happy faces from Junior and Senior Infants enjoying the fun! The boys and girls were so lucky and each one got a hotdog as a treat on this special day.
