Engineers Week 2020 This year for Engineering week, 4th Class took a trip to Bray Library to meet with a local Bray Engineer to learn about the important role of being an engineer.                                                                                                            We learned...

Earlier this month we decided it could be interesting to learn more about the force and nature of hurricanes as the news was covering a lot on Hurricane/Storm Lorenzo. We decided undertaking a STEM challenge might be a fun way to do this! Firstly, we needed to carry out some research! We looked online for some footage of hurricanes and also read some helpful articles that advised people what to do in the event of a hurricane landing near them. We learned that hurricane winds can travel up to 200 miles per hour and that hurricanes form in the sea. They also tend to have heavy rain. The centre of...

Second and Fifth class decided to join together to celebrate Engineers Week on Wednesday and had lots of fun completing a STEM challenge. We worked together in small groups to try to build a structure that was strong and tall. We had to build using either a square or rectangular shape because we wanted to see if this would make any difference to how strong and tall our structures would be. Teamwork was also very important! We used plasticine and and small match sticks to create our structures. Check out some of our photographs below to see us in action!     We worked really well...

Hi everyone! 5th Class here, and we’re going to tell you all about how we celebrated Engineers Week 2017. Firstly, we explored the work of engineers. We had a special project to complete on the interactive board in school! We also looked at this wordle challenge completed by some of our brothers and sisters a couple of years ago. We’ve started #engweek17! We built a word wall, looked at the work of engineers and we prepared for our afternoon challenge! #5thClass pic.twitter.com/8kgipCJ35I — St. Peter’s Primary (@StPetersBray) March 6, 2017 For Engineers Week this year we: Completed...

Our task for Monday was to design and create a marble maze using a variety of materials.  Here are some of our creations. ‘Feed me’……..created by Liam The aim is to get the Malteaser into it’s mouth. Not as easy as it sounds. Summer has cleverly added in a riddle for the player to solve before progressing through her puzzle. The route is clearly mapped out for the user to save any confusion. Karl has used the idea of a football pitch. He has some very tricky holes in the pitch for the player to navigate with the marble.  Here he is encountering a problem with his...

Third class had a visit from Joe, a Civil Engineer from Dublin City Council for Engineer Week 2015. Joe came to our class one Friday morning and told us all about the different types of engineering – Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil. We looked at water treatment plants, robots, airplanes, bridges and much more! One of the things we really loved were the pictures of the wind farms. Joe told us lots of fun facts about Engineering. Did you know that when Engineers are designing bridges, they leave a little tunnel with bait for badgers to pass through so that they don’t have to cross...

This year, for Engineer’s Week, we had a very exciting event as we had our first ever Junior K’NEX Challenge. As you know, our senior version is well-established – you can read all about this year’s event here and last year’s version is here. Senior Infants and 2nd class were the perfect combination to work together on the K’NEX Challenge. With four sets of siblings and lots of cousins, we made the teams into family affairs and we think you’ll be very impressed by their fantastic work. The challenge was to design and make a bridge. The criteria was that...

We’ve always enjoyed taking part in Engineer’s Week activities – back in 2005, we were the Senior Engineering Class of Ireland and the trophy was one of the coolest we’ve ever seen! This year, we really enjoyed Engineer’s Week. You can see an overview of all of our activities here. We were so excited to get an email from the STEPS co-ordinator, Sylvia Leatham, to tell us that we had won a prize for our efforts! Here’s the press release from STEPS. Sylvia had very kind comments about our work: Your blog gave us a great sense of what you did – it looks...
