All Star Attenders

Welcome to the May edition of St. Peter’s All Star Attenders. Last month’s winners were 1st Class, who became the first class to win the award 3 times this year. This equals the record by a class to win the award in any year. Could they break the record before the end of the year? Here are the winners so far:

I am delighted to announce that the winners of April’s Attendance Prize are Ms. Brennan’s 5th Class. This is the second time this year that 5th Class has won best attendance and with the better weather have opted for a trip to the seafront to get ice-creams for their prize in the next week.

We’ve been working really hard on attendance throughout the school and hope to keep improving. Well done to all classes and a special mention to the rest of our “All Star Attenders” for April.

Engineer’s Week 2017 in St. Peter’s Primary

Hi everyone! 5th Class here, and we’re going to tell you all about how we celebrated Engineers Week 2017.

Firstly, we explored the work of engineers. We had a special project to complete on the interactive board in school! We also looked at this wordle challenge completed by some of our brothers and sisters a couple of years ago.

For Engineers Week this year we:

  1. Completed a Lego challenge with 4th Class
  2. Completed a K’nex challenge with Junior Infants

For our first make and do challenge we joined forces with 4th Class for our project – to build a Lego car and see how far it could travel using a hairdryer. Check out all of our tweets and attached videos below!


Afterwards we all discussed what we had learned about our designs!

This year we also held our annual K’NEX Challenge. As you know, our challenge is well-established – you can read all about previous challenges here and here. Junior Infants and 6th Class were the perfect combination to work together on the K’NEX Challenge. With four sets of siblings and lots of cousins, we made the teams into family affairs and we think you’ll be very impressed by their fantastic work.

The challenge was to design and make a restaurant. Before we built anything, we had to draw our designs out and plan how to make them as strong as possible.

Senior Infants brought Engineer’s Week into their Aistear work. So cool!

Their STEM Club also made some wonderful catapults!

4th Class

4th Class made catapults too! They also made amazing windmills.

Mr. Foley’s Class

Mr. Foley’s Class did some wonderful work using Lego and Mindcraft. Super work lads!

5th Class update

5th Class have been really busy since the last time we gave you an update on what we were up to!

A month ago we marked International Women’s Day by recording a podcast about inspirational women who we look up to.

We also read about some inspiring women too!

We did lots of other reading too – our reading workshops were very busy!

One of the books we read was our novel ‘Trash’, which we read as part of the One Book, One Community project.

We added a new book to our library too!

As part of our reading we also went a step further – and wrote a film!

We worked on our maths in the last few months too – we’ve been studying decimals and fractions!

We’ve been making lots of music in the last few weeks too – we’ve been learning how to play the Ukulele as part of the Music Generation programme!

But not all our music involved ukuleles!

We’ve also been hanging out with Baby E for Roots of Empathy and learning more about the needs of babies!

We also kept our eye on what was happening elsewhere in the world. Before St Patrick’s Day we heard about the Taoiseach’s visit to The White House!

We recorded a podcast afterwards about what we had learned!

And we also learned about the recent history of Northern Ireland at the end of March, after the death of Martin McGuinness.

In Art we studied the intricate design of Celtic knots and crosses.

But not only that, we also learned about the work of Normal Rockwell!

We were also out and about on the playing pitches working on our fitness!

We were very proud of some of our girls who made the paper for their exploits on the field!

We mentioned in our last update that we were given some fish by Bray Sea Life – we learned more about them in the last few weeks!

We spent lots of time working on decorations for the wall behind the tank!

Eventually we had to give the fish back – goodbye Gobe Bryant, Pancake the flatfish and Patrick Fitzpatrick the starfish!

But we did also have some new visitors to our classroom too – we said hello to a slithery visitor!

Even though we were so busy, we did also take time to look after our mental health.

It was no wonder that we were so eager to get away for our Easter Break!

All Star Attenders

Welcome to the April edition of St. Peter’s All Star Attenders. Last month’s winners 4th Class chose to walk down to Bray seafront to enjoy the views with hot chocolate and marshmallows from Finbees. This was the second time they won the award. Here are the winners so far:

I am delighted to announce that the winners of March’s Attendance Prize are Ms. Drislane’s 1st Class. This is the third time this year that 1st Class has won best attendance this year and will receive an extra special treat.

There is also another special prize month in April. For the final week before the Easter Holidays any student who is in for 5 days in a row from 3rd – 7th April will receive a Cadbury Easter Egg. We have one for every student in the school (as demonstrated by Paddy Mullen) so make sure you are in each day to get your prize.

St. Peter’s are Division 3 Champions!

St. Peter’s had a day to remember last Wednesday when our girls team won Division 3 of the Wicklow Times Shield. On a day of very poor weather conditions, they battled through to top a tough group that included Templerainney, Greystones Educate Together and Gaelscoil Chill Mhantàin.

The girls fought back from 5-2 down to force a draw against a great Templerainney side thanks to scores from midfield pair Bridget Cox and Lauren Cheevers. The game finished 5-5.

It was a different story in the second match against Greystones Educate Together as we lead 4-1 but scraped a 4-3 victory in the end thanks to great defending from Ava Byrne and Kelsey O’Callaghan. Amber O’Sullivan O’Carroll’s accurate kick outs meant that we kept hold of the ball until the final whistle.

We finished off the day with a 5-3 win over Gaelscoil Chill Mhantàin. In this game the forward line of Lana Douglas, Brooke Carey and Casy Crinion came in to their own ensuring history was made as the team were the first female St. Peter’s team to win sporting silverware.

As Lauren Cheevers collected the cup, Bridget Cox made it a double celebration as she won player of the tournament.

Well done to all the girls involved.

Our Magical New Sensory Room

We are thrilled to announce that our new sensory room is complete! The room was built with the generous grant St. Peter’s received from Salesforce.org. Each of the children have now had the opportunity to explore the room and they all agree it really is magic! The room has many wonderful elements including a bubble tube, a trampoline, a slide, and a ball pool.  It was so fantastic seeing the children’s eyes sparkle and their happy faces when they experienced the room for the first time. We truly are very lucky. Thanks again Salesforce.org!

All Star Attenders

Check out this months “St Peter’s All Star Attenders Awards.” At the end of every month children with full attendance for the month receive a certificate and have their name put on the Wall of Fame. The class with the greatest attendance each month also receive a class prize and all students with full attendance get named “All Star Attenders”.

Latest athletics outing

On Tuesday students from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th class took part in a 3 kilometer run at Avondale house.  Here is some of the action.

Engineering week in 3rd class

Our task for Monday was to design and create a marble maze using a variety of materials.  Here are some of our creations.

‘Feed me’……..created by Liam

The aim is to get the Malteaser into it’s mouth. Not as easy as it sounds.

Summer has cleverly added in a riddle for the player to solve before progressing through her puzzle.

The route is clearly mapped out for the user to save any confusion.

Karl has used the idea of a football pitch. He has some very tricky holes in the pitch for the player to navigate with the marble.  Here he is encountering a problem with his design.  The marble is too big to fit into the goals to score.  This problem was solved very swiftly by Karl by some very clever engineering.  Well done!!

Some very clever design by Alec. Slight movements are needed for this maze to be completed as the matchsticks weren’t as accommodating to the marble.

Perhaps one of the trickiest mazes designed to date. Tried and tested by many without any success so far (even by the designer 🙂 )

Green Schools Latest

The Green Schools Committee have been hard at work in picking litter each week.  We have noticed a distinctive decrease in the amount of litter which has been collected.  We have been allowing enthusiastic non-members to join our litter picks in preparation for the National Spring Clean which will be happening in Early April.

We are very excited to be welcoming a visitor to the school later this month.  We will be learning all about composting and how we can use this as a way of decreasing the amount of waste we produce in the school.  Exciting times ahead at st. Peter’s 🙂
