One of our most popular events every year is our 6th class project for the Primary Science Fair at the BT Young Scientist Exhibition. We love how much the students learn from it and the confidence they get from demonstrating experiments, explaining the Science and showing off their hard work! This year, we’re taking part in the Intel Mini-Scientist project as a way to involve other classes in the fun of displaying a science project. The exhibition will take place on Tuesday 3rd December at 10am and it promises to be an amazing day. 4th, 5th and 6th will display individual, paired or small...

At the moment, many of the classes are working on place value in Maths. Place value is an important topic because it leads into addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. If your child is having difficulty with the topic or would like a bit more practice, here are some excellent sites with activities to try out. Most of these activities are more suitable for the senior classes. 1. Ordering numbers -putting numbers in order from smallest to biggest 2. Notation boards – How many thousands, tens and units in a number? 3. Place value game – Up to 100 thousand 4. Words as numbers –...

Every year, Culture Night takes place in late September. This year, it’s on the 20th of September – a Friday. It’s an amazing night where you can access venues and events around the country for free. Although all events are free, some may need to be booked in advance – which is why we’re drawing attention to them nice and early!

Today in school, we had our first fire drill of the year. Although it was unexpected, all the students reacted immediately, leaving everything behind them. They left the building quickly and calmly and then lined up at the agreed meeting spot for the class teachers to do a headcount. Well done everyone! There are some really good websites with fantastic activities to help kids to learn about fire safety – even more important than usual coming up to Hallowe’en! In no particular order, here’s our top 5: http://www.firesafekid.org/kidszone – this one...

Last Wednesday we were delighted to have a group of parents come in to learn the basics of flower arranging and designing Christmas wreaths. Places were limited to first come first served and we were delighted it filled up in no time. Everyone had a great time designing their own wreaths and flower displays as well as getting to know other parents. It was hard to pick a winner on the day, as all the creations were wonderfully designed but I think everyone agreed that Paddy Kinsella’s was by far the best!!!! Thanks to the following parents for getting involved; Melanie McDonald, Fiona Clucas,...

Today is Safer Internet Day! Here in St Peter’s, we’re very conscious of Internet Safety. While it’s important to have general rules to prevent cyberbullying and to protect ourselves online, it’s even more important to develop skills and attitudes to help us to respond to any situation. On the blog, we’ve covered Internet Safety for ‘Wednesday for Parents’ twice. This is an idea of what we recommend! This post was the first ‘Wednesday for Parents’ of 2014 and suggested Digital Resolutions to improve Internet Safety for families. Today, to mark Safer Internet Day, some of the...

Welcome to our weekly online newsletter, the St Peter’s Post! The big news this weekend is the 32 County Challenge that’s currently underway – Mr Foley, Paddy and Mr Kinsella are in Laois at the current time of writing (but hopefully will be further along by the time we finish)… As they’ve just hit Carlow, we’ll press ahead with the headlines from the week: On Monday, we welcomed Alan Nolan, author of ‘Fintan’s Fifteen’ to St Peter’s for a workshop with 5th class. It went down a storm and the students had a fantastic time drawing Ollie...

A couple of weeks ago, Wednesday for Parents covered the Bucket and Spade list and it got us thinking in 5th class about what we hope to achieve over the Summer holidays! We chose three things to aim to get done over July and August – it’ll be interesting to see how we got on when we come back to start 6th class. Here are our Bucket and Spade Lists in Animoto: What’s on yours?

Welcome to our weekly online newsletter, the St Peter’s Post! This week was a short one as we were off for Monday and Tuesday, but we packed plenty into our three days. We had a visitor from Tasmania, Wicklow Sports and Bike Week, along with posts about our own Sports Day and our participation in the Excited Festival.
