We were learning all about pets in 1st class so we decided to make homes for some of the pets we had discussed in class. Each group made a pet rock and we made a whole class brainstorm on what our pet rocks would need in their homes to survive. Take a look at our brainstorm: After we discussed our pets needs, we started to plan for our homes, making sure we included the essentials! Have a look at some of our plans. We finally got started on our designing and creating part of science week. Take a look at how our finishing products turned out… would you be happy for your...
In celebration of Science Week 2019 we decided to carry out another STEM activity! We love designing and making and wasted no time in deciding what STEM activity to try this time. We have been learning about World War 2 this month and last week we watched some footage of the D – Day parachute landings in Normandy in 1944. We wanted to learn some more about how the parachutes that the soldiers used worked and what they were made from. We looked at various video clips and found out that the parachutes were often made from silk and nylon. We were surprised as we thought silk was a soft material...
We made lava lamps. It was so cool! We wanted to do them because we saw that 3rd Class did them last year. You can see their work here. Why don’t you see our video? Later we will put up two more videos, our makey makey board and our volcanoes! Lava Lamps for Science Week 2013! from St Peter’s, Bray on Vimeo.
http://learn.code.org/hoc/1 – here’s the link! One of our recent Scratch clubs with 2nd and 3rd classes focused on a tutorial, made for Computer Science Education Week (9th December – 15th December). It uses Blockly to introduce children to writing basic code. Blockly is quite similar to Scratch in many ways and the children adapted very quickly! We noticed that this tutorial was great for the children’s problem-solving skills, as they tested their code regularly and fixed it when it went wrong. It starts off at a very easy level and gets more challenging as it...
Engineers’ Week took place between the 25th of February and the 3rd of March. We all took part in Science experiments and K’nex challenges to get us thinking about what life would be like to be an engineer! Third Class wanted to find out more about aeronautical engineering as many of us love to make and experiment with paper aeroplanes. Here is how we carried out our investigation.
This year 6th class took part in the ESB Science Blast and asked the question: ‘What happens to the food we waste and how does it impact our lives’. Science encourages us to question the world around us and how we as humans, interact with the world. We chose our project title because we identified food waste happening in our school community and knew it was an issue in our homes too. We wanted to find out what happens to the food we waste and where it ends up. We know that recycling/ compost bins are encouraged but do people and communities use them correctly or is there any...
Welcome to our submission for the Discover Primary Science and Maths award for 2022. This is our 17th year taking part in the Awards and although this school year has been a little different we are starting to get back to “normal”! Once again, we are applying for the Plaque of STEM Excellence. This award is given to schools that carry out extensive work in science, technology, engineering and maths, all of which are very important in St. Peter’s. This is the 8th year that we have had Junior and Senior Infants taking part in the award! It is great to see the young scientists have...
Discover Primary Science and Maths 2021 Application Welcome to our submission for the Discover Primary Science and Maths award for 2021. This is our 16th year taking part in the Awards, although this school year has been a little different! Once again, we are applying for the Plaque of STEM Excellence. This award is given to schools that carry out extensive work in science, technology, engineering and maths, all of which are very important in St. Peter’s. This is the 7th year that we have had Junior and Senior Infants taking part in the award! It is great to see the young scientists...
Welcome to our submission for the Discover Primary Science and Maths award for 2020. This is our 15th year taking part in the Awards, although this school year has been a little different! Once again, we are applying for the Plaque of STEM Excellence. This award is given to schools that carry out extensive work in science, technology, engineering and maths, all of which are very important in St. Peter’s. This is the 6th year that we have had Junior and Senior Infants taking part in the award! It is great to see the young scientists have so much fun learning about science and maths. Each year...
Each year St Peters has a proud tradition in exploring all the rudiments of the wonderful world of STEM/Science and of entering the ESB Science Blast. This year was no different. As an innovative 6th class we have a great interest in sports and fitness and so chose to look at how we could improve our general health . Researching under the science stand of Living Things, this idea then evolved and became more specific as we looked into which type of training improves our 10 metre sprint times the most. We began the hard work in October and worked diligently over 16 training sessions...
