Well done to the winners of our litter and waste poster competition. Our green schools committee had a lot of tough decisions to make in choosing the winners from each class. Well done everyone!! pic.twitter.com/LmQvVFQCGu — St. Peter’s Primary (@StPetersBray) January 30, 2019

Welcome back to last year’s Litter and Waste committee, who have moved onto the challenge of the Energy Green Flag. We’re delighted that every member of this dedicated group really wanted to stay on the committee and they’re looking forward to making big changes to our energy consumption in St. Peter’s. So far, Carl and Lauren have been taking meter readings, we’ve discussed hot spots in the school for energy consumption and we’ve arranged to carry out our starting audits and interviews. Watch this space!

We are delighted to welcome our new Litter and Waste Committee to the Green schools team in Peter’s. We are excited to keep up the great work of the former committee who are now focusing on Energy for our next flag. We especially welcome our two youngest members  who are in senior infants and who have been heavily involved so far in litter picking and looking after junior infant waste management. We are looking forward to a fun year ahead with Green Schools!

Our first litter pick of the year with this enthusiastic bunch! So much litter had accumulated over the summer but we are delighted to be on top of it again. Great to see the compost developing also! pic.twitter.com/9pwdiAM1lk — St. Peter's Primary (@StPetersBray) September 5, 2018

The whole school took part in our Green Schools Action Day on Friday the 10th of November.  We dressed in Green and all classes took part in lessons and activities around the theme of litter and waste.  We also focused on our school garden and we looked at improving this area. Junior Infants created a town called Juniorville using recyclable materials they gathered from home. Senior Infants gathered recyclable materials, sorted and classified them before creating their own junk art inventions. 1st class planted some seeds for our school garden.  These included peas, brocolli and rocket which...

We would like to say a huge thanks to everybody in all classes who volunteer to pick litter on the yard during break and lunch time.  Thanks to these efforts, there is seldom a scrap of litter floating about.  It is getting more and more difficult to find litter to pick:) This September we began keeping a school garden.  With help from Stephen we prepared our raised beds.  He helped us sow some strawberries. Our potatoes and strawberries in the raised beds. We throw our weeds into the compost bin. We were told to keep some green mixed in with our fruit. We look forward to adding more...

In Senior Infants, we’re very proud of our two Green Schools reps – Aaron and Joey! Lately, we’ve been learning all about litter and the importance of keeping our environment clean. We went on a walk to see if we could find litter in our local area and members of our class have been helping Ms Ward and the Green Schools team to do litter picking. We also designed posters to encourage our school community not to litter. Here are some photos of our activities! Here are our posters!

This week, in Junior Infants, we met a whale named Sally, who lives in the sea beside a lovely village called Sandy Shores. We asked Sally lots of questions about Sandy Shores and made predictions about what she might like to play, eat and do for fun! She was very upset the second time she came to visit us, however, because Sandy Shores had developed a terrible litter problem. Her home was getting polluted with lots of rubbish and this made her feel very sad. Luckily, Junior Infants are experts at dealing with rubbish and looking after the environment. The Lord Mayor of Sandy Shores heard that...

The Green Schools Committee have been hard at work in picking litter each week.  We have noticed a distinctive decrease in the amount of litter which has been collected.  We have been allowing enthusiastic non-members to join our litter picks in preparation for the National Spring Clean which will be happening in Early April. Litter beware!!! Our worst blackspot 🙁 Taking our litter picking to the next level 🙂 We are very excited to be welcoming a visitor to the school later this month.  We will be learning all about composting and how we can use this as a way of decreasing the amount...

We are continuing to work hard on keeping our school litter free.  Today 3rd class volunteered to take on the challenge during their lunch break.  They did a fantastic job.  Who said cleaning couldn’t be fun?? Carefully making sure the litter is put into the correct bins
