Today we thought about all of the signs of Spring in nature, we then went on a nature walk to check if had forgotten to add anything ! Afterwards we made a wordle of all things to do with Spring and nature. We learnt that Spring is a time of growth; the plants and trees are starting to grow buds & leaves, and the animals are coming out of hibernation. Many animals are having babies now too, we have noticed lambs, calves and chicks. We named quite a lot of Spring flowers today too; daffodil, snowdrop, bluebell, tulip, primrose, can you think of anymore? Ms. Mitchell found some frogspawn and...

Today I took part in the County Wicklow final of the Easons’ Spelling Bee. You can see my report on the school final here. It took place at Kilcoole Primary School in the St. Brigid’s building. There were 17 competitors from all over County Wicklow. I came 4th in the whole competition. The word I struggled on was archaic but I spelled all my other words perfectly. My mam and my nanny came with us and they said that they were very proud of me. I wasn’t nervous at all, but my mam was. I got a t-shirt, a dictionary and a certificate. When I got back to school, I met my teacher...

Every Wednesday, I attend the chess club down at the Esplanade Hotel on the seafront. We hold many tournaments there and practice every Wednesday. People are welcome to join us anytime. The season ended recently and lasts for a few months. The final match was 5-1 to the opposing team down in Wicklow. If enough children go, a special room will be added for younger players. We hope for the community to grow and win more Leinster leagues. If you are interested in joining, just ask me for the details and I’d love to see more people on our school get involved in Chess!

The famous Irish gymnast Kieran Behan! Picture from gymnasticsireland.com! Hi, I’m Archie in 6th Class and I do gymnastics. It is very fun if that is the thing you like doing. It challenges you to stay fit, flexible and focused! The stretches are hard depending on how flexible you are. Personally, I find them hard. You do all training exercises as you do in most sports. Gymnastics is very good for parkour, as they are basically the same thing. I joined gymnastics to improve my parkour skills and become better at it. I do gymnastics up in Ballyogan. The name of the gym is Trojan. There are about...

Today we had a delicious fundraiser in St Peter’s! Ewa and Anna are travelling to Kenya to teach for the Summer and they’re fundraising at the moment for the trip. Ewa is the sister of Patryk from 6th class and we were delighted to get involved in helping them to prepare for such a worthwhile project. The fundraiser was a really popular one. The students ordered pizza slices, which the girls got for a reduced price from Four Star Pizzas. We were delighted to raise €129.40 for the trip and it was a lovely way to celebrate St Valentine’s Day, though we should note that there...

Today, we investigated circuits and Electric Paint. Part of the work of an engineer is to design and to build everyday items so that they work better! Electric Paint can be used instead of wires to conduct electricity. This is our finished work! We used a Vine to show off a selection of them! We’ve been working on a kit from Bare Conductive, which you can find out more about here. We’re big fans of Electric Paint and we used it previously in our school-winning project for the Mini-Scientist. We had to let the paint dry.

On Monday we had a wonderful treat in Ms. Mitchell’s class because almost all of the class put in an extra super effort to our tests on Friday and had some truly impressive results! Ms. Mitchell was so proud that we even had TWO pupils of the week instead of one! As a reward we made fruit smoothies in class and got to watch footage of the Winter Olympics while drinking them. We chopped up the fruit, added yoghurt and orange juice and blended carefully, with the help of the wonderful Ms. Flanagan. We think they tasted YUM!

This month our theme is “The Body”. We are exploring all of the different senses that the body has. This week we investigated the senses of sight and hearing. We predicted what we might see and hear around the school corridors. Next we took a “sensory walk” around our school , first with our eyes closed so that we could focus on everything we could hear! Afterwards we walked around with our ears covered so that we could just focus on everything we would see! We had a lot of fun! We found out that our school is a noisy, busy and colourful place!
