Last Tuesday, March 15th, in every school across the country, students are celebrating Proclamation Day as part of the celebrations of the centenary of 1916. In St Peter’s, we had a very special ceremony, where every class was involved, finishing with the raising of the Irish flag that was presented late last year by the members of the Defence Forces. We also displayed artwork in the hall related to our projects on the Easter Rising. Our ceremony started with an introduction from our principal, Ms. Whyte. Next, Amber from 4th class, Finn and Chris from 5th class and Alex, Alana and Ryan...

Today was a very important day for St. Peter’s. The Irish Defence Forces delivered the Irish Flag and the 1916 Rising Proclamation to our school. This was to mark the Centennium of the 1916 Rising next year! We learned how to take care of the Irish flag and we also got the opportunity to ask the Defence Force questions about the 1916 Rising. Two children from 6th class did the school very proud today! They stood up on stage and read from the Proclamation and also told a personal story about their connection to the 1916 Rising. As a school, we then came together and sang Amhrán na bhFiann. It...

Today in Make-it club, our first and second class budding artists stepped back in time to create some Medieval bunting flags for the Wicklow Arts Festival! All we needed was a chopped up bedsheet for our material, lots of markers, a couple of homemade stencils and some historical inspiration. We are very proud of our end results and they will be tied together and put on display in Wicklow Town on the 23rd and 24th of May as a part of the Wicklow Arts Festival! 2nd Class are exploring different ways of learning facts from our History, Geography and Science work. We like to be active learners and learn from doing! As you have seen before we have used podcasting for Geography, building for Science and video apps for History, to name but a few things we have tried out. This week we have been learning about the Titanic. We decided to use a new app that our friend Seomra Ranga suggested. It is a news app called NewsBooth. It makes it look like we are news reporters! It helps us to learn off facts like journalists. We imagined that we were reporting on the...

2nd Class have been learning about the first Moon Landing in History. In July 1969, three American men set off in their spaceship Apollo 11. They wanted to get to the moon. Their names were Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins and Neil Armstrong. They had a landing craft called Eagle. They wore special spacesuits on the moon so that they could breathe. Neil Armstrong said ‘That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind’ when he walked on the moon. He bounced and walked in a funny way because there is only 1/6 of the Earth’s gravity on the Moon. It has become one of the...
