We had a lovely time on Wednesday when Baby Tristan came to visit our class for the second time. This visit’s theme for Roots of Empathy was all about Crying. We didn’t learn about Tristan’s crying because he is such a good baby and just never cries. When the baby comes we do special things. 1. We sing our welcome song and a goodbye song 2. We weigh him and measure him 3. We play with the baby and have tummy time with him 4. We ask questions to his Mammy Gwen 5. We always come close to the baby to see if the baby notices us and work on our communication. We love Roots of Empathy....

2nd Class are so excited. Today they started Roots of Empathy. We had a pre-family visit. Next week Baby T will visit us for the first time. Today we sat on our green mat and practiced how to behave at the mat. We talked about the things that we think baby will do next week. We guessed how big he will be. We also voted on a name for our baby doll who will help us to learn. The doll’s name is Fia. Finally, we learned a welcome and goodbye song for when Baby T comes to visit. We can’t wait for next week and will tell you all about it then.   This is Baby Fia Hard at work on our mat   For...

Cross country is a running event that lots of different schools enter. Second class will be able to enter  next year,  but this year, eight people from each class entered it in teams. It was a tough competition for all the runners in Arklow. We had a good day. All the classes were having fun. Andy was the runner of the day. All the classes had class photos taken. We had a good time on the bus. Everyone was singing on the bus. A big thanks to Paddy and everyone who came along, including Ms Sexton and Ms Byrne. Everyone said we were on our best behaviour and we did our school proud.   By...

Congratulations to the boys and girls of St. Peter’s on their involvement in another wonderfully organised local event. We  were absolutely delighted to be a part of the incredibly colourful and creative project ‘Signal Outdoors’ displayed, on the 20th September, Culture Night 2013. Individual artists, schools and local groups were invited to paint or cover doors with their own images and designs. The doors were assembled to create the centrepiece of the evening’s events. The doors were on display outside the Signal Arts Centre on Albert Avenue and it was a sight to behold. There...

The boys in 2nd Class were delighted to celebrate Ellie’s 1st birthday on the 27th June. Ellie was the most wonderful teacher for the Roots of Empathy programme and it was a lovely way to finish off the year. Paddy, Ms. Brennan and Mr. Kinsella would like to thank Ellie’s Mam Catherine for bringing in party bags and a cake for the boys. Happy birthday Ellie!

In the 2012-13 school year, St. Peter’s 2nd Class were the first group in the school (and one of the first few schools in Ireland) to engage in the Roots of Empathy programme. We recently completed all of our modules in the programme and held a celebration of the work of those involved. Roots of Empathy involves a parent and baby from the community coming into the school to work with the children. The child should be aged between two and four months at the start of the course and the children follow his or her development over the next nine months. From this, we hope the boys learn about...
